Forwarded from someone else, does this mean the end of out 6030's for comps?
"IMPORTANT: Fair warning for you all. Apparently at the plenary last week they adopted a new rule that WGS85 and 0.05% will be used in CAT1's going forwards. This means most CAT2's will adopt it too.
If you use a Flymaster or Oudie, then you just need to ensure WGS84 is selected in the settings.
If you use a Brauniger/Flytec or any of the other affected insruments on the list I'll post in a minute, put them into the bin.
NOTE: Possibly one or two of them have updated firmware since the list was generated. I doubt Brauniger/Flytec will be updated though, unless something changes in the future."

I <think> this affects only the calculated distance to cylinder or goal and not the recorded GPS track positions? Which might mean you just have to go a bit over the lines using old instruments. It is so they can use larger radius turn points without having to have large error margins which some pilots then 'game'.

Luke Nicol If this is the case though it's quite a big thing. 0.5% on a 30 km cylinder (which have been the norm in recent conps) is 150 metres x 2 fpr going in and back out = 300 metres. This for 1 turnpoint in a 50km task is actually a very sigificant distance...Zobraziť viac

Gordon RiggAdministrátor skupiny Yes Luke this is the case. Currently with the different ways the instruments calculate the distance to the turnpoint they have to use quite a large error margin. And the clever pgs have started altering their tp radii to take advantage of it. It is nowhere near as significant in hang gliding where the distances are not so many seconds and the gliders change speed a lot more.

Gordon RiggAdministrátor skupiny But I had thought at the last plenary we decided at the last plenary to standardise on the simpler measurement the 6030 uses. Because as long as everyone's instrument does the same calculation, everyone is in the same place. There is no overall advanta...Zobraziť viac

Petr Polách I have a dark tought that this all is a marketing lobby of "some" instrument company... is it possible? Cause this will force most of HG comp pilots buy new instruments...
Luke Nicol
Luke Nicol I don't think so Petr. Something has to change. We can't have us using different calcs for differnet comps. Needs to be a universal standard whatever that standard may be. So many - me included - have now scored almost nothing for the day after after n...Zobraziť viac
Joerg Ewald
Joerg Ewald Petr, the update is now available:
https://www.naviter.com/download-manual-support/#Flytec
Just for the record, we, the company formerly known as Flytec in Switzerland, didn't sell the 6030. And Naviter, who took over the Flytec brand, didn't buy it, ...
Petr Polách
Petr Polách So its all false informations (1-2 years old) that were people spreading?
Joerg Ewald Any chance to make the FAI sphere update?
Gordon Rigg
Gordon RiggAdministrátor skupiny Petr Polách joerg already posted he will try to do this update for FAI sphere on 6030/6020 elsewhere in this thread.
Petr Polách
Petr Polách OK I am sorry then... too emotional
I love the 6030... my best flight buddy.

6030 and comps: To wrap up what I wrote in various answers in the thread below:
1. Yes, CIVL has decided to move towards a world where only one earth model is used. This will allow us to reduce the tolerance on turnpoint cylinders, increasing fairness.
2. Unfortuantely, they decided to go for the "wrong" (at least in my opinion) model: WGS84, with 0.05% tolerance
3. This only affects Category 1 events: World and continental championships. Category 2 events (all others) will be able to continue using the current system.
4. Hang gliding will continue to use the FAI sphere, with 0.5% tolerance, in 2018 and 2019, to have enough time to adjust to the new system
5. Right now, the 6020 and 6030 software calculcates distances based on the sphere.
6. I'm looking into options to offer WGS84 distance calculations in a future software update.
7. I'm also working with CIVL to see how we can go back to the sphere for good. It seems that the decision was made based on incomplete information and under the false impression that the tolerance can only be reduced under WGS84.

I'm sorry, but it seems that we found a bug in the newest firmware that results in an unreadable screen in some cases when upgrading from older versions of the software. We're investigating, and most likely release a new version in the next few days.
There is no risk in trying the new release, if it works, everything is fine. If, after the release, the display is turned 90 degree, with very weak contrast, go back to the previous version found here:

Again, I'm sorry about this, working on a fix right now.
